| Menu>Windows> Mixer> Complete mixer. Check if all the little icons (speaker) are green.

As you post this problem on the Virtual Singer page, I assume you have this problem with Virtual Singer. Now VS will only sing if there is text. And it is silent if there is no text. Is it possible that you have staves defined as having lyrics but without text? In that case you won't hear them. If that is the case, try to switch off virtual singer, or remove the lyrics lines from the staves that have no lyrics. By the way, Francois makes good sense. Always provide the problematic file when you report a problem. The first thing people will ask for is to see the file in question. Kind regards, Albert

That WAS the problem. I had VS active but not all lyrics entered as yet. Thanks. Maybe you can help me with another issue. I am writing SSAA pieces and no matter what I do, the Alto 2 part sounds like men instead of women. I have tried the change staff and the apply transposing instrument, but can't make a change happen.

The software (or rather the soundbase) uses a limited number of samples to create the sound. With voices for the high pitch ranges there are only female samples available and for the low pitch rages there are only male samples available. Somewhere in between there will be a transition from the female samples to the male samples and your alto voices sound like men. The software does not know (can not know) if you want your alto voices te be men or women. Within a certain pitch range it only has a specific sample to work with. Obviously you cannot have female voices all the way down to the low d2 and you cannot have male voices all the way up to the high c6. The female and male voices must end somewhere. Unfortunately they end within the range of your alto voice. With Virtual Singer you can try to force the software to use a specific voice. But even then there is a limit to the samples. The only thing the software can do beyond that is change the pitch. At some point this will sound very unnatural. Changing the staff type or applying a transposing instrument does not solve this problem. It is only the pitch that determains the sample to be used. Kind regards, Albert

Can you tell me at what point the vocals change from female to male? I have many songs in which the alto part is not terribly low, but the audio ends up with male voices singing an octave lower than I want. For example, one song is notated with the alto 2 using a bass clef. I want a C4 in an alto voice (female) and I am getting C3 in a Bass (male.) I am probably posting this in an incorrect forum, as I have barely begun to use virtual singer. I have had this program for about five years and I struggle to understand it every time I use it. I find it counter-intuitive and the help section very unhelpful. As for the forums, you are the first person that I have found very helpful.

Now, now, here I really must object a little in defence of the many people on this forum who have been extremely helpful to me over the last years. I did find (and had to learn the hard way) that a problem that is completely obvious to yourself is not always obvious to others. People cannot help you if they do not understand the problem. That is precisely the reason why I said earlier that you should always provide the file if you have a problem with it. If they don't understand what you say they can at least try to understand the problem by examining the file. By the way, it is true that the software is not as logical as it might be when you create it from scratch. This particular software is very organic. Every time the users want a new feature it is added somehow to the existing software. So it keeps growing like a living organism and the price we pay for that is that some features are not always as logical as we would like. You should also realise that there is not a huge software company behind this software. So they don't have hundreds of hours available for all sorts of "cosmetics". Now back to your problem. I would suppose that the transition depends on the "instrument" you use. If I don't use Virtual Singer then I use the "Choir aahs 2" from the Gold Sound base. The transition there is between the F4 and E4. The "Choir aah" gets a little lower, somewhere to B3 or A3. The "Choir aah-SE" changes between B4 and C4. However if you use Virtual Singer and select the Alto voice from the classical set or the female voice from the neutral set, I have no problem getting down to G3 and still have a female voice before things start to get dubious. Personally I don't use Virtual Singer very often and consequently I don't know my way around this part of the software very well. It all depends on what you try to achieve. For me it is more important that the music is good and less important that female voices sound female. But there are some choir buffs on this forum who could not live without Virtual Singer. And most of them are happy to help out. Just hang in there and keep posting questions. Not knowing is never stupid. Not asking if you don't know, is. Kind regards, Albert

| Nothing to make with instrument, only change the singer. Click on th bird at the left, you obtain the panel with all singers. Then double-click on the singer, you can change with many options. Sorry for my English. I hope, you understand what I Mean.

| It's maybe worth checking that the clef hasn't been set with an octave offset: this is a useful feature for tenor parts (notated with a treble clef but sung an octave lower than written), but could accidentally be set elsewhere and lead to odd results. Also, if you edit the voice itself (double-click on the picture of the singer) there is an option in there to offset the voice by an octave (or more) using a slider, so check that that's showing zero (0) offset. -- Steve
