Google can often provide translations that you would never have thought of:

Happily you end up with a total of correct items (3 staves), and not spans, ranges, litter, scope, or even "worn".

Hi Tony Deff,
I just installed Google Toolbar in the hopes of reading posts in this forum. Sometimes a thread includes posts in both French(?) and English.

Whether that is the case or not, when I ask GT to translate, a banner appears with "Translation in progress...", but nothing else happens.

Can you tell me how to get even an inaccurate translation out of GT? Found no help elsewhere.
I'm using Windows 10 and IE 11.
Thanks

Google (attempt to) Translate

I've never tried it with IE, only with Firefox.

Make sure you do not include extraneous control codes by selecting all (Ctrl-A) for translation. I submit one paragraph at a time for its consideration; it does not take so long to "think".

Omit any smilies.

The major problem the translate algorithms have is context: if you look-up "portée" in an Anglo-French dictionary, you will find many meanings.
Google seems to default to the context of an ambulance or WW1 stretcher-bearer, rendering it into the obsolete English "litter"

Other musical contexts that have to be learned:

"slurs" between notes tend to be translated as "casts"
"blacks" mean "crotchets" or "quarter-notes"
"whites" mean "half-notes"
"hooks" mean quavers etc.

When posting in French by translating from English, you have to choose the word "stave" over "staff" to avoid puzzling French readers by talk of "personnel". What we need is a music-specific translator.

An excellent way to learn French musical terminology is to note the position of a menu or help item, then switch your program into French (? > Language)

Unless it is to show how automatic translations can be fun, I'd suggest to use translators only to read posts in another language, not to translate (into French, for instance) your own posts.  Better write in your own language, it will more accurately describe your meaning.

Yes, I write in English which ismy 3d language, but I used it extensively during my whole Professional career, including teaching.

And Tony is for sure at ease in French -- but do not take these examples as any obligation.

Moi, je préfère écrire en français, parce que la langue est si belle.  But sometimes it's just easier and clearer to write in English.
