Generation gap?
I would understand (and support) 4K, and not see any significance in $1000.
But younger generations don't know anymore of K meaning 1024 and not 1000, that might be the real Y2K bug...

That's probably because you have been "Hexed"  (double-entendre = Hexadécimalé \ Ensorcelé)
When I started with computers, we worked in octal (each digit 0-7).
That would be 10000 in old money.
It would be quicker to type 4K.
