How to "play" pause or grand pause

I need to place "breath marks" in a vocal score. The pause (large comma) and the grand pause (parallel lines) can be placed, but don't seem to affect the playback. What am I missing?

The grand pause (parallel lines) don't work, but the comma must work. Just be sure in the edit effects option that the "play effect" is on.

For the grand pause, you find a trick at :

Very clever trick. The basic idea is to insert a hidden or invisible time signature change in the measure where the grand pause is to occur, for example from 4/4 to 5/4, insert a hidden rest for the grand pause, and insert another hidden time signature change in the next measure to revert to the original.

Thank you so much for the help!
