Getting two clarinets to sound like two clarinets

I want to create a clarinet duet. But if they happen to play the same notes, the score sounds like one louder clarinet, not two clarinets playing the same passage.

I've tried playing with velocity, time delay, and panning. No luck.

Is there any way to do this?

In the attachment, the second clarinet uses a different instrument from the soundbase, and (using the global change window Ctrl_Alt_G),
has a delay on each note plus a microtonal shift of 1 cent (non-printing).  Occasionally, a lower velocity is also used.

You could also separate them stereophonically.

I never did it, but I think that the following setting would help:

Edit/Quantize/Humanize and Swing

and put a higher value to "Imprecision".

If you have two staves, you can humanize both, i.e. add random unperceptible delay before note attack.

If you have one staff and you cheat a little bit to have two instruments (it's doable with laws), the humanize wont have desired effect.

By the way, humanizing a little bit is always good

You can separate the two instruments by :

  • changing the instrument, Gold Base comes with three clarinettes. Two of them are "natural", they have been sampled by user. The "Natural 2" is have less attack, more "round" sound, good bass notes, the "Natural" is better in trebble notes.

  • Panning: set one half-left and the other half-right. If it's two "wide", move them near center to narrow the panning.

  • On top of the list of instruments, you have 3 buttons : Tremolo, Vibrato and FX. Try to play with them. Each player have a different Tremolo / Vibrato. Don't hesitate to set a high value for the last cursor to understand what it does. Once the speed is OK, reduce the value to something very low. I think Tremolo is more appropriate but a very slight vibrato (set by default) is good to distinguish two players.
With the FX, you can SLIGHTLY change the EQ, or a fixed resonator with low power, if you want to equilibrate sound level of a note which is less louder than others.

  • Writing your music, using velocities (there is an option or a script to humanize them a little bit), dynamics, pressure time.
For pressure, you can start by select all and apply a 90-95 value, then use slurs for 100% pressure time. Reduce pressure time where you think player need to breath
