What instruments are missing yet? I think to sample my piano (not a super one but i like it) but it is a lot of work, and if someone is doing it, i will not because my mics are cheapers. But, what you say?

Hi Marce !

I've recorded my piano but record yours... because my piano is not very very good. Guillion Bros said me that it'll be in the Gold as a "Piano 2" or "Piano 3", not the principal. My mic is also a very cheaper (from a modem).
Try to record your piano.

At present, I am working on the Gold sound base "background", i.e. the 250 to 300 synthesized sounds that will be the default non-natural basis of the new soundbase.

However, I am of course interested in any natural instrument, but strings are especially missing (i.e. a good violin, cello or contrabass).

For piano, I agree with marce. It is a quite hard job, that will only give very good results when using very good microphone. He can try anyway, but by experience, I am not sure the result will be useable.
Many other instruments (reed, brass, pipes, ...) are much less sensitive about microphone quality.

Guitar and piano seem to be the most difficult to record .

Wow indeed!!

I had thought that the Gold Sound Base was 'natural' instruments 'only' .

That was a nice surprise.

In any case, a sound base must cover the whole sound set of the GM or GM2  specification.

Most of the instrument in this set refer to "real" instruments, that could be recorded before being used in the Gold database.

However, some of them do not exist in reality(see "Atmosphere", "Soundtrack", "Square wave" or "Goblins", for example, in the current sound base).

Above this, synthesized or computer-generated sounds are "cleaner" and often more versatile than recorded "natural" sounds. In such cases, both of these sounds will be available, and the user will be able to select which of them he wants to use.

Well, i think maybe this difficult instruments can be taken from any public sampler library, like ftp://ftp.akaipro.co.jp/downloads/sound_libraries/S5000-S6000/
the public ftp of AKAI, or something like, but this may be the last options.
Another idea: tempt someone to sponsor his sound: this sample is sponsored by "Vanessa Mae", and she for the pleasure of see her name in the Melody about box, will contribute for free
Well, by, i will continue thinking in more ways to collaborate with this project.

Thanks for the link. I will check this ASAP.

About comments on submitted sounds, we already thought about it.
Each of these sounds will be marked by a "?" icon in the sound list. Clicking this icon will display comments about this sound (who recorded it, when, etc...)
